Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Logo The Department of Paleobiology - The Life of a Vertebrate Fossil
Level 2 - Track Down Fossils - Homeward Bound
One Two Three Four Five

The jacketed fossil is heavy, and getting it to the museum requires more hard work. You'll need help to:

  • Attach metal or wooden poles onto large specimens to help lift them.
  • Carefully turn the fossil into the right position to be transported.
  • Carry the fossil to a truck or boat.

Here is a fossil block all plastered and ready to be transported (by boat) to the lab.
